Pittsburgh Travel Log
This past weekend my family took a trip to Pittsburgh for the weekend. Me and my sister both had off of school for Columbus Day so we decided to take a road trip and visit a new city. Every since I started college, going away for Columbus Day has been a tradition to celebrate my dad's birthday since (which is today Happy Birthday dad!) I am not normally able to make it home on his actual birthday. I had never been to Pittsburgh but it was a fun time and I would definitely go back again. It is really nice because it is not that far of a drive from Buffalo.
Where We Stayed // We rented an Airbnb outside downtown in Highland Park area. It was a cute street that was very quite and a great place to stay. The Airbnb was very nice and had everything we could have needed.
How We Got There // Like I mentioned it is only a few hours away from Buffalo so we drove and it really was not that bad. It is a great place to go for a long weekend!
How We Got Around // You definitely need a car to explore this city. We drove everywhere and then just payed to park in a ramp once we got some place. This worked the best for us.
Day One // We left on Friday after work and got into the Airbnb around 10ish. We stopped in Erie, PA at Chick-Fil-A for dinner because we love Chick-Fil-A but we have none in Buffalo. We didn't do anything Friday night once we got tot the Airbnb.
Day Two // Saturday morning once we were ready for the day we grabbed brunch at Coca Cafe. I had the avocado omelet and fresh OJ. The food was delicious just be aware it is not the quickest service when we went but it was very busy.
After getting filled up with food we headed to the Duquesne Incline and rode the cable car up to the top level. I have to say it was way higher than it looked. When we were going up to the top it was a bit scary. Be sure to have exact change because they only take cash. It was a great way to see the whole city and I am glad we did this!
After this we headed to the Strip District to walk around. We checked out all the local stores on the street and it was so interesting. I have never seen so many different cultures represented in one place. We grabbed coffee at Allegheny Coffee and a sweet treat at My Sweet Lilly Bakery. Both places were amazing! I got a cookie at the bakery that was so good like the best macaroon ever!
After this we headed to dinner at the Commoner downtown. The restaurant was the perfect level of laid back yet upscale. I got the herb your enthusiasm gin & tonic which was so refreshing. For dinner I had the airline chicken which was amazing! The flavor was so good. After dinner we walked to Point State Park to see the fountain. This was really cool to see at night lit up. We ended the night having a milkshake at the Milkshake Factory which was so good. They even had dairy free options!
Day Three // We started the morning with breakfast at The Gluten Free Goat Cafe which was so freaking good. I had the french toast which was gluten free. I can't even remember the last time I had french toast so it was a nice to be able to have it. I also ordered a iced chai which was just as good. They used fresh tea to make it so there was not a lot of added sugar!
After breakfast we took a trip to Soergel Orchard for a day of fall activities. I have never seen a farm so busy in my entire life there had to be at least 400 hundred people there. We spent way more time there then we thought we would but it was just so fun. They had pumpkin picking, apple picking, a cider press demonstration, tons of food, farm animals, a gluten free store, and a gift shop. It was the perfect fall day other than the weather was like 85! We had so many snacks at the farm we were not too hungry so we went back home for a bit before getting a salad at Hello Bistro near Pitt. The salad was good but the service was pretty crappy. I don't think I would go here again based on how long we waited. We ended the night having cake for my dad that we ordered from the Gluten Free Goat Bakery. We just picked it up in the morning with breakfast. It was a GF vanilla cake with chocolate frosting and it was very good!
Day Four // We checked out of the Airbnb in the morning and went to breakfast at The Square Cafe which was another great spot for breakfast. I had an egg scramble that was very good. After this we went for a walk/hike outside the city. We got a bit lost and ended up walking for a LONG time but we made it back. After this we drove home and stopped for dinner at Chick-fil-a. again.
We had such a fun weekend with lots of food of course. I would love to go back again and check more things out. If you are looking for restaurant ideas check this list out from Summer Wind she has a huge list. She recommended we try Le Poulet Blue, Dianoias, and Tako but all of them were booked already for Saturday when we checked so they must be really good!
